CLUTHA GIVEN SECOND PRIORITY (P,A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 6. Ways had to be found to tackle the river control job so that the heritage of the future would be. saved and the lives of people protected, said the Minister of Works, the Hon. R. Semplc, this morning, in a statement on erosion and soil conservation. - Each river had to be treated according to its habits, said Mr Semple, and he revealed that those that needed attention, had been listed with the following priority: Manawatu, Clutha, Ngaruror and Tutaekuri (Hawke's Bay), Orari, Opihi and Temuka (South Canterbury), Waimakariri (Canterbury), Taieri (Otago), Wairau (Marlborough), and "Waipaoa (Gisborne). The recent floodings had given further indications of what work was needed and the aerial photographs taken of most of those rivers. gave a good knowledge of the source of the trouble experienced with each. The methods, used through the years in some cases were stupid and dangerous, aggravating and intensifying the problem rather than offering a, remedy. The aim was now to try and tackle the job in a .big way. >
