NEWS AND VIEWS [By Watcher.] Nominations will close at 8 p.m. today i'or the Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting. Entries i'or the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps are due tomorrow. 'Confusion, who may appear at the meetings to be held this month, is a ixalf-sister by Solicitor-General to Donnybrook Fair and Wild Talk. In Chancery is regarded l as a doubtful starter at Banks Peninsula. Though no decision has been made, Golden Souvenir may start in the Kinloch Handicap in preference to the Peninsula Handicap. Sing Sing is likely to be nominated tor both the Iliccarton and Riverton meetings at Easter. Air Ace, who has had a few weeks of exercise oh the New Brighton beach, will soon be given more serious tasks. Jimmy Dillon raced without half hopples at the. New Brighton meeting, and broke more than once. Max Baer may be converted to the trotting gait. When seen working at Forbury Park during the meetings in January he trotted in all his work and shaped! so well at this gait that he was nearly mistaken for another horse. fli> is bred to trot on both sides. In the event of divisions being necessary at Waimate, the prize money will be increased by £SO. More than 20 of the Auckland horses which competed at Te Aroha travelled most of the way by steamer. Albino has a good record so far this season. Before he went out of training his six starts had yielded three firsts, one second, and two thirds. A stake of £260 and a £5 trophy are being offered in the Waimate Cup. Nominations for the meeting will close on March 12. Technique won his first race at Ashburton when he was four years old, under L. 0. Thomas. He was sold to Messrs H. W. Alston and R. Swann last November for £3OO. Since then he has won two races, and £420 in stakes. The trotting season in Southland practically closed with the Invercargill meeting last Saturday. There will be one lignt-harness event at the Southland Racing Club's April meeting. H. D'Eganneh, driver of Manpower in the Royal Navy Handicap at the Metropolitan Trotting Club's Patriotic Meeting at Addington on Saturday, was fined £lO for careless driving and interfering with A. Field, driver of Scotch Music. The stewards found that the interference was unintentional. Lady Nahleen, who started favourite in the hack seven at Woodville, missed the jump out, and her chance was hopeless from the start. Killeymoon attempted to win the open six at Pahiatua all the way, but collapsed and finished seventh. This ■was his first race this season.

Copper Trail, who will probably be elected favourite _ for the Wynctham Juvenile Stakes, is a half-brother by Quite Sure to Kid Wolf. Tn seven starts this season Pencarrow has been out of the money. on only two occasions. The Wrack gelding is engaged in the second division of the Wairewa Trot at Banks Peninsula.

Leonin finished third from 60 yards in the Stalin Handicap at the Metropolitan meeting on Saturday. He should he hard to beat from the limit in the Waihora Park Handicap on Saturday. The Vulture might run in two races on Saturday. R. Hawes and A. Messervy have been engaged for the respective classes. Messervy will also ride Royal Rae, R. J. Mackie Whackie, and C. H. Mackie All Night. The lastnamed horse, did not run at Hokitika because of the heavy going. The Taranaki Stalkes, which was to have been run on March 10, has been dropped for this season. This would have been the thirtieth contest of the series. The late Sir George Clifford's Flying Start won the first contest, and other winners of this race include Gloaming, Desert Gold, Rational, The Hawk, Ammon Ra, Glentruin, Silver Link, and Kindergarten. Tti the last three seasons, and during the present term, the Hazlett stable has produced 40 winners of jumping events. The wins include practically every important steeplechase v in the South Island. Noko, Pocket Flash, Sir Percy, Jack o' Lantern, Double Light, True Range, and Anglo French will represent the stable some time or other this season, and Lisheen and Inscrutable may have a turn at the jumps' before the end of the present season. northern writer says that Typhoon, winner of the Patriotic Handicap at Trentham, in the New Zealand record time of 2min 29Jsec for a mile and a-half, may contest the Thompson Handicap at Trentham. with the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton to follow. Typhoon got his name from the fact that his former owner, Pilot-officer Norman Preston, was flying a Typhoon aircraft over France when he was named. Norman Preston was posted missing over Le Havre 18 months ago. and has not been heard of since. He never saw his horse race. The Patriotic Handicap winner was bred at the West Derby Stud by his present owner, Mr A. E. ("Ted ") Preston, who gave him to his brother when he .was a foal. He is by Defoe from Doe, a mare -which Mr Preston bought from Mr W. H. Ballinger for £SO.
