MISSION FULFILLED
OPERATIONS IN ITALY ANNIHILATION AIR OFFENSIVE (Rec. 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 28. The Allied Army in Italy continues to fulfil one of its prime functions, which was to furnish bases for an annihilation air offensive against the Germans from another direction besides the west. These assaults are having most beneficial effects on all the European fronts.
\ Mediterranean air communique states that in addition to attacks already reported, strong forces of escorted United States bombers yesterday attacked railway yards in Southern Germany and Austria, dropping over 1.000 tons of bombs on Augsburg. The coastal air force and the Balkan air force were also active. The Allies flew nearly 1,700 sorties for the loss of 24 aircraft.
The Fifteenth Strategic Air Force based on Italy has repatriated more than 5.000 airmen who crashed, baled out, or parachuted to safety in enemyheld or Allied-controlled territory, says a (Rome correspondent.
