W.C.T.U. CONVENTION

REPORTS AND REMITS The Dominion Convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was continued on Saturday. Mrs Hiett (Dotniniop president) was in the chair. The opening devotions were conducted by the Y-members, and the address a stirring call to renewed activity, was given by the Rev. J. Chambers. Reports on the following departments of work were presented and adopted:— Backblocks camps and institutions; hands of hope, Bible-in-sc,hoots, evangelistic, flower and philanthropic, good citizenship, home meetings, prison and reformatory, Loyal Temperance Union,, and Press, A great volume of-work in most of these departments was reported from all parts of the Dominion. Regarding the Bible-in-schools report. a suggestion that the work of the Bible-ip-schools League should become a department of the Council of Christian Churches was, negatived. . Some suggestions relative to alterations m departments were noted, and eire to be considered by the Dominion executive., REMITS. A resolution from the Auckland district read—‘‘That the' tinie is opportune for the renewal of the W.C.T.U.’s historic interest in prison reform; and, therefore, all unions aro urged to make a study of the penal conditions of this country, and to initiate a campaign for their improvement.” Certain facts lyere brought forward in support of this, and a strong emphasis was placed oil the need for proper classification of prisoners. Other aspects of prison life were reliably reported on, and the remit was passed unanimously. Nelson district urged—‘ That the alcoholic content of beer be not increased after the war.” This was carried unanimously A bps drive was arranged for the afternoon, and was much appreciated bv the members of the convention.
