LONDON, January 27. Lieutenant-general Lear, the newlyappointed deputy commander of the American _ troops in the European theatre, said he was not alarmed about the number of Americans absent without leave, which, according to the pro-vost-marshal, now totalled 18.000. No doubt a few thousand had wilfully gone off, but the majority had simply overstayed their- passes and would wander back to their units within six or seven days. General Lear revealed that over 9,000 rear area soldiers had been released for retaining as combat troops, and the programme would be stepped up with the employment of more French civilians for non-com-batant services.
