GIANT FRENCH SUBMARINE
RAMMED AHD SUNK BY U.S. SHIP
MONTREAL, January 29. The 'Standard' announces that 1 the giant French submarine Surcouf was rammed and sunk by an American ship while on convoy duty early in 1942. This is the first time any explanation of the submarine's loss has been permitted by the censors. _ The bare announcement of the loss was made'in London in April. 1942. It is not known whether the sinking was due to a mistake or an accident, or whether the vessel responsible was a warship 1 or a merchantman.
