JAP. CRUISER SUNK
ATTACKED BY CARRIER-BASED PLANES
DESTROYER AND TRANSPORTS ALSO CLAIMED
WASHINGTON, Nov. 27. " Carrier-based planes attacked shipping : and airfields in Luzon on Saturday," says a Pacific Fleet communique. "Incomplete preliminary reports indicate that we sank a heavy, cruiser of the Kuniano class, a destroyer, four transports, nine cargo vessels, one oil tanker, and two luggers, and damaged four cargo vessels and one oil tanker. Our planes shot down 29 Japanese planes, and our flak shot down eight. We destroyed 35 planes on the ground. We bombed radio on Chichijima, Hahajima, and Mukojima, on Saturday." The Pearl Harbour correspondent of the ' New York Times ' says the Ku-mano-class cruiser went down near Santa Cruz, about 65 miles above Manila Bay. The cruiser was first reported damaged on the last attack after carrier planes had strafed it in shallow water, where it appeared to be grounded. Tokio radio says: "The new Japanese combat plane Toryuu (Dragon Slayer) has taken off the mask. It is putting cold fear into .the : enemy's heart, and is maintaining mastery of the air over Leyto."
