BAD NEWS FROM CHINA

JAPANESE NEARER BURMA ROAD TOWN

MAY STRIKE AT CHUNGKING

(Rec. 11.45 a.m.) CHUNGKING, Nov. 27

The Chinese announced the fall of Hochin, 20 miles from the Kwei-chow border and 120 miles south-east of Kweiyang, the Burma Road town from which the Japanese may strike at Chungking, says the Associated Press correspondent. There is general acceptance of the Japanese claim that, they have captured Nanning, but Chungking thus far has not mentioned the enemy's southward drive towards Indo-China.

The Chinese are probably handing out bad news in small instalments to avoid panic. Nevertheless the general uneasiness is heightened. Persons arriving at Chungking from Kwei-chow said all British nationals have been advised to depart. General Wedemeyer's communique states that Liberators on Saturday night attacked an enemy convoy northeast of Tourane (French Indo-China). Two Japanese light cruisers were damaged, one receiving two direct hits. Another Liberator sank an enemy sub-marine-chaser in the same area. Mustangs bombed airfields at Hengyang, Lin "ling, Kweilin, and Liuchow. Warhawks destroyed 100 sampans and damaged 50 on the Saing River. Mustangs sank a freighter and left two sinking near Anking. on the Yangtze River.
