OBITUARY

MR D. W. MALLOCH

Mr Donald Wright Malloch, whose death occurred at his home at Waikouaiti last Friday, was born there 73 years ago, being the elder son of the late Mr Donald Malloch, a pioneer settler. He attended the Otago Boys' High School, 1885-86, and later took over his father's storekeeping business at Waikouaiti, which he carried on for about 50 years until his retirement about 10 years ago. lie took a deep interest in the early history of New Zealand, and wrote various articles on his own district. His publication, ' Early Waikouaiti,'_ has put on record much of the local history r of Johnny Jones and the early whaling *davs which otherwise might have been lost.

Tn his younger days Mr Malloch was a keen footballer and cricketer, and he •represented the district at both games over a long period. Although he did not take much part in public life, he was a supporter of every worthy cause. He acted for a time as secretary of the Waikouaiti Early Settlers' Association, and was a memher of the Borough Council, the Domain. Board, and the Athenlenm Committee, of which he "was until recent months a trustee. He was a trooper in the defunct" Otago Hussars, and as secretary of the Waikouaiti Troop he played an. enthusiastic part in the activities of the unit. Up to the time of his death he was a keen bowler, and the local club is indebted to his interest .and generosity. _ He. was an ardent supporter of the' 1 Presbyterian Church. In 1933 he was appointed a justice of the peace. "i Mr Malloch was of a kindly and generous nature, and was possessed of a Teady sense of humour. In 1899 he married Catherine Stuart, eldest dauehter of the late Mr D. M. Mackay. His wife and youngest daughter predeceased him some years ago. He is survived oy three daughters Mrs E. D. Fleming ftßalclutha). Mrs A. J. Messervy (England), and Mrs E. T. Pollock (Green Tsland)—and In- a son, Mr D. M. Malloch. Invercargill.
