ELECTRICITY FOR PENINSULA

COMMITTEE'S RECOMMENDATION SUPPLY LINE ACROSS HARBOUR Further consideration has been given by the Electricity Committee of the City Council to the question of augmenting the supply of electricity to the Otago Peninsula area, and recommendations, which are to be submitted by it to Monday night's meeting of the council, embody the erection of a supply line across the harbour from Port Chalmers to the fish hatchery, via the islands, and thence to Portobello The committee's report states that the Peninsula area is at present supplied from the city via Sunshine to Portobello and that for some months past the increased load on the line has reduced the voltage at times below the limit provided in the Electricity Supply Regulations. 1925. A recording graph submitted by the city electrical engineer showed a variation in voltage from 198 to 248. The regulations allow a variation of 5 per cent, either way from the standard of 230 volts, that is from 218 to 242. It is imperative, therefore, to augment the supply to this area, states the commitee, and this can only be done by one of the methods set out in the previous report to the council, in view of the fact that the existing conductors are of insufficient size to carry a greater load.

The committee will again submit its recommendation that authority be granted to bring the supply to the Peninsula up to the standard required by the regulations by the erection of a line across the harbour from Port Chalmers via the islands to the fish hatchery, thence to Portobello, an estimated cost of £5,415. The preliminary consent of the Otago Harbour Board has been obtained to this proposal and the terms of _ a proposed agreement are being investigated. The completed agreement would, however, be submitted to the council for final approval.
