FRUSTRATED RECONNAISSANCE
SKIRMISH IN THE ARAKAM (Rec. 8 a.m.) KANDY, Oct. 8. Three days after it came out into the open a Japanese reconnaissance party in strength, which penetrated the IndqArakanese border to test out hold oh it, is on its way back, says the Associated Press correspondent.. The force was given guns with which to Tindertake the mission, and ordered north to fight for information. Except for shortlived actions, the raiders did not make an appreciable display and were easily beaten off. They were spotted as soon as they left cover on October 4 and concentrated near Taung Bazaar, 10 miles north of Buthidaung, the same area as that used for < the February offensive. There they divided into two columns, whose actions thereafter were closely observed by our patrols. Our troops waited while 150 of the enemy crossed a river, and when these bunched they sprang a carefully-prepared trap. ■ Eastern Air Command announced that Liberators made a 2,000-mile round trip in the course of a railway wrecking raid across Burma, into Thailand. At least one troop concentration r was successfully attacked from a level ofdOOft.
