ALTERNATIVE CANAL ROUTES
STRAFED BY BUR BOMBERS ({Rec. 11.45 a.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 8. As bridges and supply points servicing the battle area aro being torn to shreds by Allied fighter-bombers the Germans are attempting to use the canal systems to supply troops by barges. Thunderbolts and Lightnings on Saturday swept down the canals destroying at least 50 barges and damaging many more, especially on the RhineMarne canaK In spite of the fact- that enemy fighters gave cover to railway communications and troops, Allied aircraft pounded railway lines in the areas of Aachen, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Treves, and Coblenz, destroying or disabling at least 82 locomotives and knocking out 343 rail cars.
