AUSTRALIA'S COAL SHORTAGE

DRASTIC RAILWAYS CUT LIKELY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, October 8. Additional drastic rail cuts in both Victoria and New South Wales are threatened as the result of the latest deterioration in coal production. The position is made more critical by the need to transport stock from the drought areas and to carry fodder. Already Victoria's rail passenger traffic has been reduced by 50 per cent. A conference between the transport authorities and Federal Cabinet Ministers will be held this week. In Newcastle 100 miners have been fined more than £SOO for absenteeism.
