SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Obituary.—The death of Mr Andrew liut'hanan at his residence, Balciutha North, on Monday, after a sudden seizure on Sunday morning, removed a well-known resident of the town. He was born at North Taieri in 1863, being the son of the late Gilbert Buchanan, who arrived in the Phillip Lamg in 1848. He met with < considerable success at ploughing matches in the Taieri district, and was champion at Mahngatua CTvo years in succession. He later joined the staff of Daigety and Co. With them he was stationed first at Millon and then at Balciutha, and after 30 years' service, 'retired 15 years ago. During his residence here, Mr Buchanan took an active part in the affairs of the Baiclutha Bowling Club, being an official (including secretary) over a period of years, and was elected a life member. He was a keen ang!e s r and an excellent gun shot. He was also interested in • the Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society, of which he was secretary for a period. In 1904 he married Miss Mary Wood, daughter of Mr David Wood, and she survives him, together with three sons, Douglas (Balciutha), Gilbert .(postmaster at Ross), and Gordon, formerly a journalist in Dunedin. and now in the Middle East.

Successful Comedy.—ln an effort to raise funds for the Student Nurses' Association, the Unity Players presented a three-act comedy in the Britannia Theatre, Balclutha, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, to very large audiences. The 'play was delightful, and reflected credit on the producer, Madge Moffett (Dunedin), and the members of the cast. As a result. over £IOO will be netted for the nurses.

Milton Fire Board.—At the quarterly meeting, held on Wednesday, Mr C. Keinan was elected chairman, and it was decided to express appreciation to Messrs W. J. Cockburn and P. Gray (retiring members) for services rendered.

Ealy Lambs.—Early lambs have made their appearance on the Toko. Plain. One was born on the farm of Mrs A. M. Allison, Moueymore, on June 30, while another was seen on a Crichton farm the other morning.
