SALUTE TO LONDON
TRIBUTE FROM DUNEDIN EMPIRE CAPITAL'S STEADFASTNESS A tribute to, tho people of London for their steadfastness against all enemy attacks is paid in a message sent on behalf of tho people of Dunedin to the Lord Mayor of London, and also to tho chairman of the London County Council. The Mayor (Mr D. 0. Cameron) sent the message yesterday in response to a cabled request by tho Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Sir William Darling, that Dunedin should join tho major cities of the United Nations in paying tribute. Tho message from the Lord Provost of Edinburgh was as follows:—
" Will you join with the capital of Scotland and other capitals and cities of the United Nations in saluting London? Edinburgh suggests a message of sympathy and admiration now. and at some fiiture % date some tangible token of everlasting remembrance—William Y. Darling, Lord Provost." Mr Cameron replied to Sir William 'Darling that ho was cabling _ London as suggested, and that Dunedin would also be pleased to co-operate with Edinburgh in presenting a tangible token later. His cablegram to the London authorities was as follows: —
" The city of Dunedin, New Zealand, salutes London. Citizens of Dunedin send the people of London this message of loving sympathy > in tho very difficult and trying period through' which they are pasisng, and their deep and profound admiration for the courageous and fearless manner in which tho .perils created by war are being faced. Dunedin sends her best wishes, and prays that tho blessing of God may be richly with the people of London durine these days of severe trial and affliction.— Donald C. Cameron. (Mayor. '>
