THE "ROCKPHOONS"
NEW EFFICIENCY IN AIR SUPPORT SPECTACULAR ATTACKS IN CAEN ASSAULT (Rec. 8 a.m.) LONDON, July 10. Rocket Typhoons yesterday staged a series of spectacular attacks, bringing ground support technique to a new degree of efficiency,- says Reuter's correspondent at Shaef. They swept in only 10 feet above the heads of cheering British and Canadian troops driving into Caen, to send their rockets hissing into German gun emplacements a bare 50 yards ahead of the advancing troops. Working in close co-operation with the forward Army units, waves of " IRockphoons " blasted strongpoints, pillboxes, mortar and artillery positions, and machine-gun nests throughout the morning, despite what Shaef described as appalling weather. _ It was probably the finest demonstration of close support from the air seen on any battle front. Messages of thanks and congratulations were sent Ibaok to the R. A.F. from the local commanders on many sectors. Typhoons also attacked infantry and tank concentrations east and south of Caen in order to prevent German attempts to send reinforcements to their tottering positions west and north of the city. A total of 3,500 sorties were flown yesterday despite the bad weather.
