The Second N.Z.E.F.'s sprinting gunner, Charley Masters, gained tho title of sprint champion of 'East Italy bv winning the 100yds and the 220yds <tt the East Italy track and field championships at Bari. Running barefooted, he clocked lO.lsec in the final.of tho 100yds, after being last away but ono, and beat J. Smutz, the exNebraska University track star, and coholder of the world's Mlj-ds high hurdles record, to the tape. Four other New Zealauders, comprising the N.Z.E.F. team, qualified for the finals, but Masters was the only one to win titles and qualify for the Services championships at Rome this month. I. F. Judge, of Hamilton, was third in tho 220yds hurdles, and R. F. (Buckingham, of Hamilton; was third in the quarter-mile. S. F. Stevens, of Christchurch, was second in his heat in the half-mile, but- faded in the final. He was also among the six finalists in the high jump. C. L. Main, of Auckland, was not placed in the final of the shot putt.
