BETTING FIGURES IN N.S.W
SYDNJSY, May li. Evidence of t!ie huge betting that is taking place at horse and greyhound meetings in New South Wales" is obtained from figures for the totalisator and bookmakers' turnovers. For nine months of the racing year, from Julv 1. 1943, to March 31, 1944. the totalisator turnover amounted to £4,048,340. This easily beats the previous record for the State for any full racing year. The bookmakers' turnover of '£22,773,200 for the nine months is a record since the half per cent, tax on turnover was imposed in 1940.
