RACING

The fine weather experienced in Southland during the week has left the mile grass track in good condition, and as the fields are good there should be some interesting racing. ■ Army Handicap T. (3.49). Castigate, Royal Stone, Pukatee. " Novice Handicap (3.43).—Major Grattan, Turi Queen, Sylvia Direct. Freyberg Handicap (4.47).—Debtor, Priucess Maritza, Certainty. Air Force Handicap (3.39).— Loyal Peter, Navigate, Dundee Sandy. Stalin Handicap T. (4.9).—G01d Weed, Castigate, Royal Stone. Roosevelt .Saddle Handicap (3.s).—Major Grattan, Sura Wave, Van Horn. Churchill Handicap (2.58).—81ue Horizon, Convincer, Happy King. News and Views. The trotting meeting to ,be held at Winton to-morrow will be the first fixture the Winton Trotting Club has held since December, 1941. The percentage of wins scored bv horses whose names are omitted from the telegraphed lists 'of acceptances must be high, and quite a number of punters are always on the look-out for these horses. Theioway (8.10) was originally omitted from the list of acceptances for , the Kuku maiden race st Otaki to-morrow, which "will now be run as two races.

At the Winton Jockey Club's meeting last March the starter was " on the mat " for having despatched one of the fields from a moving-in start, but apparently no inquiry was made into a similar br«ach of the rules in the race won by Gulf Stream at Ashburton.

Silver Sal, who returned, a, .remunerativeprice when she won at Ashburton "last Saturday, is the last of the progeny of Sweet Memory, who died when Silver Sal was foaled. The latter was hand reared and purchased by her present owner for £SO. Sweet Memory- was also the dam of Membo, winner of the Grand National Hurdles, 1932, and NightcaW j The straight-out trotter Blue Horizori will be matched against the pacers again at Winton to-morrow in the mile and a-quar-ter race. At Invercargill a fortnight ago lie was sent out favourite for a similar race, but lost his chance by fa'iling to go away at his right gait. This. was the first mistake the Quite Sure gelding has made in a race, and he will only have to begin as he usually does to be very hard to beat.

Certainty has the reputation of being one of the fastest pacers in Southland, but is very uncertain at the start. At Irivercargill a fortnight ago he began (off the limit) weir for a change and beat a good field in 4.47 3-5 on a holding track. At Winton to-morrow he has ; been assessed at 4.43, and meets Debtor, whom he beat by a neck at Invercargill, on 48yds worse terms. ■ This handicap would probably not prevent Certainty winning again if he would begin correctly. The cloakroom referred to in the improvements at Wingatui is not a new building, but the old cloakroom removed by the club's own staff to a more convenient site.

The Gore Trotting Club has been favoured with big nominations for its patriotic meeting, to be held on Saturday of next week. The straight-out trotter, Blue Horizon, has been engaged in the tighter classes 'or pacers. Gulf Stream cost his owner, Mr G. A. Lang, of 'Wellington, 285 gs, and has now won him £865 in stakes. As Gulf Stream u partial to soft tracks, he should add to that score during the winter meetings. Ann Mie, who has not won a race since the Grand National meeting, nearly two years ago, is now rising eight years old. She has started a dozen times this season for one third, and is to be retired to the ■stud.

The following nominations have been received for the Timaru Trotting Cup, £SOO. Class 4.3l:—Accountant, Braw Lass, Battle Colours, Busted Flush, Dusky Sound, Gold Pot. Oxford Scholar, PaTrish Lad, Stormtost, and War-field. The ' Timaru Herald ' makes the suggestion that servicemen and women in uniform, who are at present admitted to all racecourses free of charge, should be charged an admission fee, the proceeds to be handed over to the Red Cross.

The ' Southland News ' reports that tho only flat racers left in training on the Invercargill course are Carolyn, Fair Trial, and Inscrutable. They, and fortunately, quite a string of jumpers, are being prepared for the winter fixture at Wingatui.

F. W. Ellis is at present handling a rising two-year-old by Siegfried from Winsome Sister, a half-brother to Koyal Lancer and a full brother to Invulnerable, for his breeder. Mr W. Swale. Another for the same owner, a gelding by Siegfried from Lumiere. is also being broken in by Ellis. Since Bolovna resumed racing after a lengthy spell after running second to Minority over a'mile at the Otago Hunt meeting last September, he has not shown any re-

turn to his form of a year and two years ago, and he is now being schooled for hurdle racing. His dam, Ravenna, threw two good hurdlers in Ventrac and Iravenna, and a lot of Paper Money's progeny have shown, proficiency in jumping, iioioyna is now rising nine years old, and though kept well up in handicaps, has not won a race since November, 1942. The brilliant mare Tranquil Star, whose stake-winnings are £19,640, recently sustained a broken jaw in a fall of four horses at ' Moonee Valley. Her winnings have only been exceeded in Australia and New Zealand bv Desert Gold, £23,133, and furious, £20,172. Gold Weed is set to give away 120 yards in the Stalin Handicap at Winton to-mor-row, but is a high-class trotter. When he won over two miles at the Wyndham meeting in March, he went 4.35, and beat Blue Horizon, who was conceding him 36 yards. In to-morrow's race Gold Weed is assessed at 3.59, • whereas his Wyndham time was equal to about 3.43 1 . When Freckles won at Invercargill a fortnight ago, she recorded 3.57 2-5, Royal Stone, second in 3.52 4-5, and Castigate third in 3.50. The last-named appears to have the best chance nf extending Gold Weed, who is one of J. Walsh's team, trained at Gore. Winners at the Invercargill trotting meeting, held a fortnight ago, and their assessments at Winton to-morrow, are: —Elation. 3.31 and 3.32 3-5 (assessment, 2.58 for a mile and a-quarter, equal to about 3.33 J-); Royal Stone, 3.39 3-5 (assessments, 3.45 and 4.5 for a mile and five furlongs) ; Convinces 3.56 (assessment, 2.57 for a mile and a-quarter, equal to 3.33 for a mile and a-half); Certainty, 4.47 3-5 (assessment, 4.43), Blue Horizon, 3.47 2-5 (assessment, 2.58, equal to about 3.33\ for a mile and a-half) ; Dundee Sandy, 3.38 4-5 (assessment, 3.39); Freckles, 3.57 2-5 (assessment, 4.5); and Happy King, 2.56 (assessment, 2.56). |
