U.S. WAR EXPENDITURE

WASHINGTON, May 11. . President Roosevelt asked Congress for new army appropriations totalling more than 15,500,000,000 dollars, bringing the total military expenditures to 49°000,000,000 dollars for the next fiscal year. * A White House statement said that the estimates contemplate the maintenance and operation of an army of i 7,700,000 officers,, men, and women on the Offensive in a global war up to June 30, 1945. In addition to the new appropriations, there will be available more than 33,500,000,000 dollars sent up for current appropriations, due primarly to a reduction in the projected strength of the army, reduced shipping losses, and a substantial reduction in the unit'costs of war items because of the volume of production.
