MINE WORKERS CLAIMS
REJECTION BY OWNERS
AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 12. A statement ia made by Mr T. O. Bishop, who represented the New Zealand coal mine owners as follows:—" A conference between representatives ot the mine workers and the coal mine owners which commenced sitting on Wednesday afternoon, concluded the following day without result. On behalf of the workers a number of claims were put forward and debated, and in replying, the mine owners said that in consideration of the short hours now being worked in the coal mines, and the greatly increased earning capacity of the mine workers since the commencement of the war', they had after careful consideration reached the conclusion that no increases of any kind were justifiable. " The granting of the final proposals of the workers would entail an addi • tion to the national coal bill of about £250,000 per annum, and therefore th" claims must be declined."
