EXCHANGES BETWEEN STALIN AND CHURCHILL. PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT AS PEACEMAKER NEW YORK, May 10. " Mi- Churchill and Marshal • Stalin had many blunt* exchanges across the conference table at Teheran, with President Roosevelt always acting as the tactful peacemaker," says the ' Saturday Evening Post,' in an article published six months after the conference. " Since Teheran, President Roosevelt and Marshal Stalin have carried on.a most cordial personal correspondence with letters each way in, their own personal handwriting supplemented by personal cablegrams.'" Without any reservations the article declares that the Teheran., conference was marked by strong " asperities " between Mr Churchill and Marshal Stalin. " Marshal Stalin's edged wit, aimed at Mr ChurchilJ, was subsequently to affect the-amenities between the ' big three.' Mr Churchill was easily nettled and replied in ikind. It was President Roosevelt's self-appointed task to moderate these asperities before they drew blood. " President Roosevelt escaped these quarrels," 6ays the article, " and it is noteworthy, although the political significance remains obscure, that Marshal Stalin, while frequently rawhiding Mr Churchill, treated President Roosevelt with consideration approaching deference. The President clearly exhibited a tough-minded determination to enrol Russia as a sincere and willing collaborator in post-war settlements. " Marshal Stalin volunteered to President Roosevelt a sweeping declaration of his desire to conciliate his neighbours, saying flatly that he had no desire to own Europe. His country was only half populated, and the Russians had plenty to do at home. Marghal Stalin also gave President Roosevelt personal assurances regarding Finland,"-
