THE COAL SHORTAGE

LINTON MINE IDLE (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 26. The Linton Company's coal mine was idle to-day. A stop-work meeting was held this morning, lasting until 10.30. Several matters were discussed, including the distribution of boxes. The miners then decided to go home for the day. Consequently there was no production at the coal mine, the output of which is over 400 tons a day. The Birchwood mine, where an explosion occurred on Sunday morning, has. been closed indefinitely following an inspection, which disclosed that another stopping had been blown out.
