RUSSIANS ADVANCING STEADILY MORE TOWNS ROUND LENINGRAD RECAPTURED
(Rec. 11.5 a.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 2d. The Russians are steadily driving the Germans from the ring of satelite towns round Leningrad which the enemy strongly fortified. Already the Germans have lost most of the main lateral railway in this sector running through Gatchina. The railway has been cut on both sides of Gatchina, and Tosno, where it joins the Moscow line, is closely threatened. Beyond Gatchina the. country is more open. Russian pressure has also been directed to lengthening the salient in which the Germans are placed by continuing to advance from Leningrad and west of Novgorod. The effect of any German retirement from the Volkhov River sector is thus nullified The Moscow radio says Tiatsi, south of Krasnoye Selo, was captured by ski troops. It was a strongly fortified centre, but the ski troops cut the road behind it leading to Gatchina and then pounced in small groups On the Germans and penetrated the town, which was cleared after fierce street fighting.
