—Vice-Regal.— The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall; and Lady Newall left Wellington .this morning for the East Coast. They will return to Wellington on February 18. The following announcement was made from Government House today:—Major H. A. Jaffray has assumed the duties of military secretary and comptroller of the household in place of Major C. J. Holland-Martin, who is returning to England on the completion of his period of duty. Major Hugh Alexander Jaffray, 11th Hussars, was born in 1896 at Skilts ttleddich, England. He is a son of the late Sir William Jaffray. Educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he served with tho 11th Hussars from 1915 to 1929. At ouo time he was joint-master of the Earl of Yarborough's hounds, the Cotswold hounds, the Neynell and the Zetland. He has been serving with a training unit in Britain since the commencement of the present war. He is a keen fisherman.—Wellington Press Association. —'Air Passengers.— Passengers leaving by the northbound air liner to-day were:—Mr T. J. Virtue (for Ohristchurch), Mr C. Hoisham, Mrs C. Hois-ham, Mrs H, Nicholas, Flying-officer J. Porteous, M., J. Grant, Mr J. Crow (for Wellington), Mr G. McDonald, Mrs K. Smyth, Mr L. Wallace (for Auckland). Advice has been received by his parents at Sunnyvale, Green Island, that Flying-officer Douglas W. Lockhart has been promoted to the rank of flight-lieu tenant. Mr Frank Bird, registrar of the Supreme Court at Greymouth, will retire from the Government service on January 31 after a period of 46 years, including service in the South African War and 42 years with the Justice Department. A Press Association cable message from London states that Lt.-col. Sir Clutha Mackenzie, who was blinded at Gallipoli in 1915, is on special duty with the Government of India inquiring into and reporting on the causes, prevention, and cure of blindness in India, also on the education, employment, and general welfare of the blind.
