A knotty legal problem appears to confront the local police as a result of a report that the City Fire Brigade answered a call at G. 15 p.m..yesterday to a chimney firo at the Central Police Station. The question arises whether the department will now iproceed to prosecute itself for that serious offence of " allowing a chimney to be on fire at premises aforesaid." Tf this case reaches the court, the prosecuting officer might find it necessary to plead guilty and after emphasising the seriousness of the crime to plead for leniency. Tn view of the inclemency of the weather yesterday the court might find it a reasonable excuse that unexpectedly heavy firing was necessary on a midsummer's day and let the offender off with a caution.
