RAIDERS OVER LONDON
LONDON, December 10. Four raiders were destroyed to-night after a few scattered enemy planes crossed the south-cast coast of England. A very small number penetrated the London area, giving the metropolis its first alert since December 1. Spasmodic gunfire was, heard in several London districts One raider, which dropped flares, became a target for a concentrated barrage, and hundreds of watchers in one area saw it shot down. Bombs fell in the vicinity, but there were no casualties.
The raiders, flying high over the coast, met with what the residents describe as the greatest barrage ever heard. High explosive and incendiary bombs were dropped on an East Anglian village, damaging cottages. A convent high school in the Thames Estuary quarter received a direct hit, and it is feared that there were casualties.
