PUNTING TRAGEDY

THIRTEEN BOYS DROWNED SYDNEY, December 12. Thirteen boys, all aged 8 to 10 years, were drowned when a punt overturned during a sudden storm on the Clarence River, about 400 miles north of Sydney, on Saturday afternoon. Eighteen other ■boys were rescued. The boys all came from Grafton, a township with a population of 9,000, and were attending a Wolf Cubs' picnic. Ten of those who were drowned came from one suburb, and four from the same street. The large punt capsized only 200yds from shore in a channel GOft deep. Howiiig boats were rushed out in an attempt to rescue the boys. An eye-witness said most of them were drowned because they held on to one another in the water.

Distracted mothers had to be prevented from running into the river in their anxiety to look for their missing children.
