THE SLAPPING INCIDENT

RIPORT 01 GENERAL PATTON GREAT USEFULNESS TO ARMY WASHINGTON, Nov. 27. The Commander-in-Chief, Middle East. General D. D. Eisenhower, has reported that Lieutenant-general Patton was guilty of " reprehensible conduct " to two enlisted men in striking them in hospital. Both men were suffering from nervous disorder, and one had a temperature. General Eisenhower's report has been submitted to Senate by Senator-Robert R. Reynolds, chairman of the Senate Military Committee. The report states General Eisenhower's belief that Lieutenantgeneral Patton has a great usefulness in any assault where loyalty, drive, and gallantry by the commander are essential. He has been warned (by General Eisenhower that any repetition _of his conduct would result in his being instantly relieved of his command. Lieu-tenant-geutrai Patton had made a full apology to the two soldiers concerned and to those present when the incidents occurred.

General Eisenhower concluded: "It has been reported to me that in Lieu-ter.nit-general Patton's every recent appearance before soldiers he has been greeted with thunderous applause."
