The Chinese are completely encircling the enemy.. , American and Chinese planes blasted tho port.and city of Shinchiku (Formosa) on Thursday, and destroyed 47 Japanese planes, 12 of which were shot down. The Fourteenth Air Force headquarters announced that American and Chinese bombers and. fighters bombed and machine-gunned Shinchiku aerodrome, destroying 31 planes without loss to themselves. . . - ■ The Associated Press says that the China-based Mitchell bombers and longrange fighters carried out a raid which caught the Japanese off guard, .with only a few planes aloft. The bombers covered the aerodrome and installations with tons,of fragmentation bombs and left many blazing planes and buildings. The fact that the mission -was carried out bv medium-range Mitchells, not long-range heavy bombers, emphasises significantly the extended orbiVof •American operations, which are being brought ever closer, to,Tokio.
