NEW ZEALAND CUP
TO-M3RRQW3 EiG RAGE
CANDIDATES' FORM REVIEWED [By St. Claie.] With on!}- three races on the calendar run over two miles there is some excuse f<ir the shortage of good stayers in the Dominion, but with the class not outstanding at the present time and the big stakes on offer it is disappointing- that more owners have not attempted to develop stay, firs. A field of 15 for.. Uie £3,000 stake to be . contested to-morrow is quite large enough to provide an interesting race, but the ciass, below the four top-weighls, does not measure up to the standard expected. The following are particulars of the field:—
Rakanui (Hunting Song—Opportunity) 7vr.s. 8.13.
"Battledress (Posterity MidinetteJ, syrs, 8.11. .
Gladynev (Musketoon—Caviare), 7yrs, 8.8.
Representative (Nigbtinarcb Praise), 4yrs, 8.4. • The Monarch (Croupiej—Killruda, 6yrs, 7.9..
Kevin (Martarma—Taraheke), syrs, 7.8. To Kawiti (Night Raid—Queen March), 7yrs, '7.5. ". Ciassform, (Inflation— Spcarform), 7yrs, 7:1'.-.
Night Pal (Night March—Palantua). 7yrs, 7.0.
Foxhaven (Foxbridge—Pelagia), 4yrs, 7.0 Palfrey (Man's Pal—Yennachar). syrs, 7.0. • ■■;..•
Scottish Dale (Foxbvidge—Drama), syrs, 7.0: >
Don Quex (Lord Quex—Seamstress), 7yrs, 7.0.
' Silver .. Sox (Salmagundi— Silver Sail), 4yrs, 7.0. Patria (Siegfried—Princess Pat), syrs, 7.0.
Rakanui had 8.12 in last year's Cup and finished third to Royal Lancer 8.11 and Oladynev. 8.12. He started .19 times last season for five wins, six seconds.' and two thirds,' his final winning performance being under 10.3 in heavy going over a mile and a-quarter at -El'.erslie in June. This season lift has started three limes for a win and a. second. This success was recorded under 10.4 over nine furlongs at Napier Park'this month. A splendid weight carrier, and a proved stayer. Battledress was an outstanding three-year-old, but failed to win a race last season. Last Saturday, having his second start this season, he won over a mile and a-half on the Otaki course in the slow time of
2.36. Also a proved stayer. Gladynev, second in the last two New Zealand Cups with 8.11. and 8.12 respectively. Last season he started 16 times
without scoring a win, but was twice second and twice third, and this year out of six starts, finished second once, to Battledress at' the' Levin meeting last week, and now meets him on 61b better terms. Another proved stayer. . Representative, a pronounced favourite ever since the appearance of the handicaps. He was a very consistent performer last season, winning, three times, twice third, find five times tourth out of 15 starts. His outstanding performance was, with 7.11, beating a high-class field over a mile ,at .Eliorshe in 1.37 1-5. This season he has
Started three times for two wins and a * s6cond. In the latter he went under to T/weedsmuir, to whom / he conceded 271 b over a mile and a-haif at Ellerslie this month. Has yet to run out two miles. - The Monarch started 11 times last season under three different trainers, but it was not until he came under his present trainer's care that he showed winning form. In the latter's hands, out of four staTts, ho won twice and was second and third in the other two races. He won the Whyte Handicap in heavy going at Trentham last July, but this season has started five times without getting into the money. Kevin had 16 starts last season for three -wins and five thirds. His best performance was when he outclassed a good field and won easily at Oainaru last May in 2.6 3-5. Out of six starts this season, he wcm_ over a mile and a-quarter at Ashburton under 9.0, Foxhaven and Palfreybeing close up third and fourth. He will meet Foxhaven on 51b better terms on Saturday. He started in last year's Cup, biitNyas last most of the way-. Te Kawiti was started 18 times last season for one win (over a mile at the Waikalo meeting last November), four seconds, and two thirds. This season he has s-tartfd six times for a win and a third. His success was achieved in the Waverley Cup last month under 8.1, Battledress, 9.0, being among those unplaced. Classform, with 21 starts 1 last season, wou four times, was twice second and third. Her best performance was over a . mile and a-quarter at Hastings last April when she beat a big field under 7.8£. She has had five starts, all unplaced, this season.
Night Pal, a son of two New, Zealand Cup winners (Nig'htmarch, 1930, and Palantua in 1933). He won three races last season and-was twice second and third.. Under 7.10 he won over a mile and 35yds at Washdyko last July, but has been unplaced in his only two starts this season. Foxhaven promised well when he cleaned up a. good field in the Dunedin Guineas last spring, but in 6is subsequent starts failed badly. This season he has shown much better form, and though he has only won once, over six furlongs at the Grand National meeting, he has two good seconds and two thirds also to his credit. He has not been over a longer journey than a mile aud three furlonjs. but on breeding should stay. ,
Palfrey is another classic winner that, failed to maintain his early promise. He won the North Island St. Leger, but as a four-year-old (!a*t reason) started a dozen timesf for one *ecomi placing and this season six times for a third. Scottish Dale, who won the Great Faster Handicap as a three-year-old, started last season well with a second and a first, but then failed in her next 11 starts to get inLo the money, and this season has done no better in the three races she has had. Don Quex had only six starts last season, finishing in minor places in the fust three. In eight starts this season he has won once, been second once, and three times third. At the Levin meeting last Saturday he started favourite, but finished third to Battledress and tiladynev, and meets them both on much better terms next Saturday.
Silver Sox, who is still eligible for hack races, had 13 starts for two wins, four seconds, and three thirds last season, and this season seven starts for a second and a third.
Patria, another still eligible for hack rates, started nine limes last season for a couple of thirds, and this season scored n win out of four starts. Both this mare and Silver Sox appear io have been flattered by their owners in being included in a New Zealand Cup field. Final gallops and recent performances point to the four top-weights holding the best chance, and when the machine closes most support may be given to . Representative, Gladynev, and Raka-
nui. Of the light-weights," Foxhaven appeals most. The Stewards' Handicap. Though the sta.ke is the richest ever given in the South Island for a sprint race the field for the Stewards' Handicap is not as large as is usually the case, and as in the Cup the quality not up to the usual standard. Considering the quality of the fields he has beaten, the Southlander, Fleet Street, appears harshly treated with 8.9, and Sir Bradbury was raised 111 b for his win over seven furlongs at Trentham last month: Poutatau is always a dangerous horse, particularly should the going be a little soft. Lord Advocate has been galloping brilliantly on the (racks recently, and Monetary won well at Invercargill ■ last. Saturday, and has escaped with a penalty of only 21b. Royal Flight, who with three wins in succession to her credit this season, has been favourite since the weights appeared, has arrived at headquarters in good order, but has had no' racing since she ,won the Dunedin Guineas, easily, last month. Tulere was brilliant at tliis time last year, and is reported to. have returned to form. John Gay has not been seen at his best since winning at Trentham last January. Indian Sign, a brilliant two-year-old, showed a return to, form at Ota-ki early last: month. Grilse finished a'close second to Monetary at Invercargill, and meets him on 51b better terras. Theolateral, Mauretania, Dinah Dhu (third in last year's race), and Sham Bov have no form" this season to recommend their chances. Boulder Dam beat an indifferent field ovjsr seven furlongs at Napier this month. • Park Light won a seven furlong hack race at the Grand National meeting and at Wellington last month beat 911 but Xeenah over a mile. Silver Lily at a difference of 10'ih in her favour, easily beat Park Light over seven furlongs at Trentham last month, and on the second day ran second in a mile race. The following' is . the field : STEWARDS HANDICAP, £1.200 6f. Fleet Street 8 9 Indian Sign 7 8 • Sir Bradbury 8 6 Theolateral 7 8 Poutatau ... 8 5 Grilse 7 7 Lord Mauretania 7 7
Advocate ... 8 3 Boulder Dam 7 6 Monetary ... 8 1 Park Light 7 fi Royal Flight 8 0 Dinah Dhu ... 7 3 Tutere 711 Sham Boy ... 7 0 John Gav .:, 710 Silver Lily ... 7 0 The race bears an open appearance, and the wagering is likely to be widely spread with preference for Lord Advocate, Royal Flight, Monetary, or ' Tutere, who are in the same stable. The Derby Field. The withdrawal of Port'Royal and almost certain withdrawal of "Conspicuous and Invulnerable from the New Zealand Derby to be run to-morrow leaves a possible iicld of 12, the largest for many years.' All are colts or geldings, and the following are those left in and their breeding:—John o' London (Solicitor-General— Raphis), Oamforth (St. Boswell—Lady Kettle), Young Bob (Siegfried—Dissemble), High Play (Croupier—Miss Odilie), Joseph Conrad (Night Raid—Clorane), Expanse (Bulandshav—Expense), Sedgemere (Revelation — Siega), Gulf Stream (Tideacre—April Fool), Upton (Nigbtmarch—Chaloid), Stavros —Phaleron Bay—Brown Paper), Tata. King (Beau Pere —Zarcne), Mr Valiant (Mr Standfast —Unreasonable), Burberry (Man's Pal—Windshield)., On his recent performances Tara King is likely to start favourite, and Expanse and High Play look to be his most troublesome opponents.
