' MUSSOLINI AND LAVAL The disappearance of Mussolini is a blow lo Laval, says •France,' the French daily newspaper published in London, which does not hesitate to refer to the French dictator as the " agent " of the Italian who brought disaster on his country. In France there were a number of people who bad a sneaking admiration for Fascism, "men who at any price wished to hold down the masses in a state of servitude r.nd overthrow the ■ Republic.' which they judged too liberal." * By subtle bribery, such as lavish advertising of Italian resorts in- the French Press, and the. subvention of enterprises that favoured Mussolini and sang his praises as a man who knew how to keep order, French opinion was worked upon. He was put 'forward as the antidote to Bo 1 -'I"^'- 1 "^'-" 1 which was held up, as it was in as the bogy. ' In France, says the newspaper, one couid feel the campaign was organised. " The head of this party, who dared not say his nam*, was Laval;-he who tied his fate to Fascism before he did so to Nazism." As Prime Minister of France, later as a member of the French Senate, Laval was Hie servitor of'Mussolini; As Prime Minister he rendered the sanctions against Mussolini ordered by the League of Nations inoperative, and as Senator he intervened in the Foreign Affairs Commission and in the lobbies'in'favour'of .Italy.. The newspaper accuses Laval of cherishiug the ambition to play in France the tame role as Mussolini in Italy. "Mussolini did not content himself with propaganda. He' fomented civil war: He sent arms and money to the infamous Cagoulard: organisation, which provided assassins for. the murder at Bagnolos de l'Orme of Iwo well-known anti-Fascist Italian refugees, the Rosselli brothers. The guilty were caught. Vichy liberated them. Laval certainlv owed his friend that.. "The Halo-Fascist, party which governs at Vicbv'is dragged down in the fall of Musmiitii'."
