SERIES OF UPSETS.

(Special to the 'Star.')

The weather took an unfortunate turn »arly on Saturday morning, light but steady rain setting in. Although it made the top of the course proper slightly slippery it did not prevent a largo crowd attending the fixture. However, some surprise results had to be accepted. The Te R&pa-trained Marble Fos was installed as favourite for the Wellington Handicap. Ho was a long way back early, and although he came home in good style to take part in a keen struggle tor fourth place he never looked actually dangerous. Going along the back in the Glen Hurdles, Treasurer was handy to Flying Spy, who had taken over from Black Musk. Turning into the straight the southerner was in charge at the last fence and thereafter had no trouble in winning, although Moderate came fast from several places back to run him to half a length, with Flying Spy three lengths back. Colonol Rouge, whose rider broke his gear with half a mile to go, was fifth under difficulties, with, half and Half, Rockery, and Knight Commander next. A surprise was in store for the patrons when Tara King, a three-year-old maiden performer, won the Wellington Guineas quite definitely from Mr Valiant, who had been handy practically all the way, with vtho hot favourite Balfron putting in a late claim for third. Balfron was. in the centre of the field, with Atatu towards the rear, as the field swung across the top. Sirneri and Magnus Lux both ran honest races to finish ahead of Atatu, although the last- ' named made up a lot of ground in the last two" furlongs. In the Wainui Handicap, Hasten, after being handy throughout in the running, came away to win nicely from Moutoaßond and Donnybrook Fair, the latter pair having • been at the rear turning for home. Lenardo, after beginning smartly, dropped back to have the run of the raco, but could not do better than fourth, with La Fillette (the last away) next. Daljarrock showed brilliance, as did Pornpit, but both weakened.

Making a good' beginning in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap to attend Starlet and Miss. Wheriko in the early running, Silver Lily was handy on straightening up. The Paper Money mare then ran past the leaders to. win very easily from Park Light, who came through along the fence to beat Killeymoon for second place. Hones Sal and Dungloe were next. The favourite for the Wellesley Stakes, Subdued, proved herself : to be definitely superior. Sha worked to the front racing to the turn leading on to the course proper, andin the run down the straight was never in danger of defeat. The Ringmaster filly drew away to a five lengths' victory from Master Ted, who had been reported to be a likely non-starter, with Lord Theio half a length fur, ther back. Young Margaret •was right up fourth, with Barrage and Silvio next to finish, the Hastings Stakes winner being under pressure immediately after straightening up. A brilliant performance was registered by Beau Vaals in the Shorts Handicap, when he got up to beat Sir Bradbury by a head in the last couple of strides and register I.IIJ for the six furlongs. Autolite and Sir Bradbury led on to the course proper from John Gay, Compeer, and' Beau Vaals. Inside the distance Sir Bradbury promised to be tho winner, but hard, ridden, Beau Vaals got up to snatch the honours by a head. Flying Ace was slow away, and did well to get up for third two lengths back, with Compeer, Rakanui, and Whackie in line. The last-named di'd not enjoy the best of runs. *

Patu Po followed up his success at-Mas-ter'ton with another good win in the October-. Handicap. There was a lot of merit in his performance, for he started from the extreme outside. Hunting Charm ami

St. Leon were fir.-t to show out from Oonghiz Khan and Griffin, but Patu Po steadily improved his position to bo lying third to Crispin, who had raced to the front, and Genghiz Khan at the straight, entrance, where Foxcaicher also improved her position. In a keen struggle over the final furlong Patu Po had sufficient in reserve lo hold off Foxcaicher, with St. Leon handy. Sir Wina was a creditable fourth, with Gereufeast and Ringcraft next, Hunting Charm dropping right out of the picture.
