LATIN UNION
OPPOSED BY FIGHTING FRENCH
" STAB IN THE BACK " MGRIES
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 22. The French Information Service at Algiers has sent, the following message to the Fighting French Delegation in New Zealand:— " Reports from -foreign sources mention projects for an entente or federation between France and Italy, and even a Republican Spain. Well-informed circles in Algiers believe what General de Gaulle once quoted: 'One day will come when true peace will bring' together from the Bosphorus to tho Pillars of Hercules nations who have thousands of historical reasons to induce them to act in concert so as to perfect themselves, but it is only a vision of the future.'
" For the time being French public opinion has not forgotten Italy's attitude towards France in June, 1940. Besides, a Latin union or federation would bring more inconveniences than advantages to France. When the war is over France will unquestionably wish to live peacefully and even on friendly terms with her Mediterranean neighbours, but it is quite wrong to suppose that the French Committee of National Liberation contemplates projects for a Latin union."
