RUGBY, October 7.—The South 'African, General Klopper, who recently reached the Allied lines in Italy, said that by the end of August most of the Allied prisoners had been removed northwards. Isolated from the outside world, the prisoners were over-optimistic when the news of the Allied successes came through. The Germans exploited this by broadcasting reports of Allied landings far up the Italian mainland, and used a strongly-accented American voice over the Naples radio. The trick succeeded. Many prisoners made for the places mentioned and were captured by the Germans. REHABILITATION. Cabinet this week approved of the appointment of Lieutenantcolonel F. 'Baker, formerly officer commanding the Maori Battalion, as Director of Rehabilitation.— Wellington Press Association. NEW RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE.
