ALLIED FORAY ON AXIS SHIPPING HITS ON EIGHT MERCHANTMEN (ißec. 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. Other hits, the effects of which were not observed, brought the total vessels hit to eight merchantmen of three to 8,000 tons, also a landing barge and a 1,200-ton ore vessel.

Admiral Fraser told the other ships of tho fleet in port to give a cheer as she entered harbour -to the United States aircraft-carrier from which the torpedo planes and dive bombers were launched.
