BOWLING NOTES

[My Draw.] Short paragraphs dealing with elul) activities will be appreciated, but it is necessary that they reach the office of this* paper not later than noon on Tuesday. New Zealand Championships. Special committees have been appointed for the big tournament to be held in Dimedin commencing January 12. The Tournament Committee will comprise members of the Xew Zealand Council and the following members of the Dunedin Centre: —Messrs A. T. Robertson. K. Longworth. W. W. Calender. G. A. Xelson. G. G. Adess, W. Johnston, and W. O. Clark. The Melieshments ami Catering Committee consists of Messrs S. A. Wood. A. Cook. .1. G. Butler, and the' Xew Zealand Council's executive. A special committee has also been set up to make the necessary arrangements for umpires and markers. Mr Devereux is convener.

ICntries for the New Zealand championships close with Mr R. S. M. Sin'•'air, Dunedin, on Mondav, November •29. A matter which is causing some concern to the Tournament Committee is the question of accommodation. Owing to the shortage of staffs some of the hotels in- the city are unable to cater to their full capacity. The committee is doing all in its power to get in touch with persons who have rooms available during the tournament period, and no doubt arrangements will be made to see that all entrants from outside of Dunedin arc accommodated. There is every indication that the entries will be large; they may even outnumber those of 19-11-4.2 period, which had to be abandoned owing to transport difficulties, caused mainly by the entry of the Japanese into the war. Centre Competitions. The entries from local clubs in tin.' centre's annual competitions must be regarded as satisfactory. There will ho-one section more than last season competing in the Saturday intcreliih matches. The Wednesday competition requires another rink to make last season's total of ')[). In the Holmes Feathers there is an entry of .19 clubs, the same a.s last season. In this competition it has been-decided _to reduce the number of ends to IS, with a start not later than (i o'clock. Of course, where it is possible to commence these games earlier than the time stated it will be in the interests of the players to do so. In connection with bowling costume for Saturday games, besides white or cream trousers, a light grey colour is now allowable, and by " lighl grey " is meant not medium or dark grey. As some club blazers arc unobtainable the wearing of a club colour blazer will not be enforced.

Umpires and Markers. A circular has been issued to_all local clubs by the Umpires' Association, asking for the co-operation of bowlers in connection with the forthcoming Xew Zealand championships, in getting together a number of persons to assistby acting a.s umpires for the various days of play, and as markers when the singles are in progress. A special circular has also gone out to presidents of the various clubs seeking their assistance in the matter of clubs having representation at the next meeting of the Umpires' Association to bo held in the Caledonian Society's board room in the T. and G. 'Building, Princes street, on the evening of October 22. The association is keen to get a full muster of those willing to assist in making the umpiring and marking of the big tournament something above the average. We owe it to the visitors to give them of our best. Pavilion Pars. Mr C. >R. Ingram has been appointed secretary of the Wellington Bowling Centre.' Charlie, as a member of the Wellington Club, won the New Zealand championship singles in 1917. and will' be well lifted to carry out the necessary duties in connection with the centre.

In the article which appeared in this paper of September 29, Mr J. Forster was referred to as president of the Dunedin Centre, Mr Forstcr is president of the Xew Zealand Bowling Association. The question of altering the constitution in regard to club colours is, the writer understands, to be persisted with by some of the clubs interested. It will be remembered that both the Taieri ami Roslyn Clubs have raised this question at local centre meetings, hut for some reason the Xew Zealand Council appears to want to sidestep a matter which is of national importance. It is the intention of the Dunedin Centre to issue a fixture book on similar lines to the handy edition distributed to all players last season. Club Opening Days. The Kaikorai Club, despite the unfavourable weather conditions, held the opening ceremony last Saturday. Mr (.;. F. Ritchie, the club's president, welcomed a largo attendance of members and friends, together with representatives of sister clubs, the Howling Association, and the centre. lie thanked the lady supporters for their material assistance throughout the past season. Mr Forster. .Dominion president, spoke of the championships to be played in Dunedin in January, and called on all bowlers to assist in the matter of accommodation. lie also made reference to the " bowlers' effort " to raise funds for the providing of a green and amenities for disabled soldiers. Mr W. 0. Clark, president of the local Umpires' Association, took the opportunity to stress the need for ellieient umpires and markers for the big tourney. Mrs J. Johnson, president of the ladies' section, and Mrs Ritchie rolled up the lirst bowls, and the season was declared open, though no play was indulged in. The Ladies' Band provided a programme of music which was much appreciated. " Draw "' wishes to acknowledge invitations to the Leith Club opening on October 9 (Mr L. Sanderson, president) ; Anderson's Bav (president. Mr S. D. Wilson); Otago (Mr 1). S. Uornal, president); West .-Harbour (president, Mr J. Donaldson) ; Dunedin (Mr 11. G. Williams) : and Port Chalmers (Mr R. S. Jack), which hold their opening ceremonies on Saturday, the 16th inst. A Suggestion, " Weed Killer "_ is of the opinion, seeing that the Xew Zealand championships arc being held in this city, that there .should be a competition among the bowling clubs for the best floral display within the clubs' properties. He further suggests a small cash prize for the best and second best displays. (" Draw " is of the opinion that club officials will have plenty to do without adding to their difficulties between this and the big tourney in January.) One-day Tournaments. On Labour Day (October 10), four clubs in the local centre will be holding tournaments. _ They are: West Harbour (special patriotic), North-east Val- i ley. Moriiington. and Anderson's Bay. Posters in connection with each of these tournaments have been sent to clubs, but so far none of the clubs have thought it worth while to send one to " Draw."
