"TRIAL BALLOONS"
REPORTED ITALIAN COUNTER-PROPOSALS LONDON, August 1. Reuter's says that official quarters in London are sceptical regarding the reports of Italian counter-proposals for an armistice. They point out that the reports may bo mere " trial balloons " sent up by the Italians. The (Rome radio quoted the newspaper ' Popolo di Roma ' as saying that considerable surprise was caused by the Italian attitude towards the peace proposals, and continues: "The enemy has not so far been able to go beyond Sicily, where ho is still meeting stiff resistance, and yet he wants the capitulation of all'ltaly and a rupture between Italy and Germany. This is absurd both from the political and the military viewpoints;" The paper, alluding to the threats of the Allies that they will resume bombing, states: " What counts in war is decisive action, not thveats. To reconquer our freedom from the enemies within only to lose it again immediately to the enemies without would be an abominable farce which the Italian people would not countenance. Fortunately for us and for Europe we have not reached the stage where_ we have to accept proposals. Patriotic feeling has not allowed tho Italians to lose their commonsense."
