RESPITE OVER
ITALIAN MAINLAND ATTACKED HEAVY BOMBING OF NAPLES (Rec. noon.) RUGBY, August 2. The short lull in the bombardment of Italy ended when yesterday the Naples docks and nearby airfield were bombed and the Italian mainland bombarded by the Navy. Giving this news, to-day's communique from Allied headquarters says that railway and road targets were shelled by Allied cruisers and destroyers. The return fire from the shore was ineffective. The communique adds that American naval units are giving support to the land forces advancing along the northern coast road in Sicily. The air communique from the Middle East says that Allied heavy bombers yesterday raided the docks in Naples and an important airfield nearby. Both targets are officially reported to have been well covered with bomb ibursts. During these attacks eight enemy fighters were destroyed in cornhat.
On taking office Marshal Badoglio said the war went on. He and the Italian people will quickly learn how right he was.
