SWISS CONFEDERATION

652ND ANNIVERSARY (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By 1 elegrapli—Copyright (Rec. S a.m.) RUGBY, August 1. 'To-day the people of Switzerland are celebrating the 652nd anniversary of the founding of their confederation. To mark the occasion the Swiss President, Dr Philip Etter, spoke to his people on the situation. "The Swiss people," he said, "are living in the middle of a giant fortress, free but surrounded by burning rings of fighting people." He uttered a warning that hope for peace in the near futuro was premature in spite of recent events, and the more -the war was protracted the more would Switzerland improve her strength of resistance. In this respect the President added, Switzerland was lucky enough to have in her army excellent apparatus of defence. It was prepared for any eventuality.
