DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB

The Dunedin .Gardening Club met on Tuesday night, when Mr. J. Passmore gave an address on the ' Cottage ' Garden, in which he described the methods of growing flowers from ■■ seeds or plants. Seeds could be sown in boxes, frames, or in the open in a well-sheltered situation. It was necessary to grow plants desired to furnish the farden all the year round. To obtain the est results when- growing wallflower, the speaker said the seed should be sown in drills in; the open ground, about the first week^in-November. They should be up in about 10,:days- : Transplanting should be done in.early January, the plants being set six or eight inches apart. During March they. should be wrenched by cutting in between with-the spade. The plants should be transplanted to their flowering quarters in April or May. With polyanthus, Mr Passmore said, the best results were obtained by treating them as if they were annuals. In September the seed should be'sown in boxes, transplanted in. January, and removed to their permanent'position in the autumn. . Iceland poopies, through cultivation, selection, and hybridising, had been considerably improved arid werp now among the best and most useful, of. the cut flowers. Seed sown in the autumn in boxes; and transnlnnted to an open and wanii situation, would produce blooms from October to June. On the'motion of Colonel G. Barclsv. a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker.
