£4,000,000 OVERSCRIBED ALL CENTRES STILL ELIGIBLE FOR FREYBERG PENNANT In a broadcast speech last night the Hon, W. Nash, Minister of, Finance, announced that the Lib* erty Loan of £35,000,000 had been over-subscribed by £4,000,000; that Nelson annexed the first flag of honour with a 21 per cent, oversubscription; and that when the Prime Minister announced the final figures on Wednesday or. Thursday the total might well be £39,500,000. During that interval districts will be able to compete for the special pennant to be presented by General Freyberg for the area which at the final accounting has the high* est percentage over its quota. Mr Nash said that the response to his appeal for widespread support from the people had been extraordinarily successful, the total number. of subscribers being 419,763. He gave the following details' of the subscriptions, which amount to £39,054,386, and mentioned that these figures are not complete, as further applications in tha post will be included:— Stock, 62,570 applications, for £29,609,755. Bonds, 182,193 applications for • £2,063,429. National Savings, at least 175,000 depositors for a total of £7,381,202. The number of depositors to tho National Savings accounts had not been checked and counted, said Mr Nash, but the Director-General of the Post Office, in giving the figure of 175,000, stated that, if anything, it was on the low side. For the purposes of the loan campaign tho Dominion was divided into 18 districts, corresponding to the chief postal areas, each being given an objective. The results on a district basis, showing the percentage of the target reached, are as follows: ; \

On the other hand, National Savings deposits totalling £2,250,000 have been included in, the district figures. 1 , Mr Nash said the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Kingsley Wood, had sent him the following cable message:—"l have followed the progress of the Liberty Loan with keen interest, and congratulate you most heartily on the magnificent result, which sbo\vs the determination of the people of New 2!ealand' to devote all their resource to the, common cause and to speed the path of the United Nations to victory.'-' "It is a splendid effort, worthy* of New Zealand and worthy of the cause for which we are fighting—fighting ti> win the war, to win the peace, and build a better world," declared Mr Nash. There had, he continued, never been more widespread interest in a. war loan. The organisation jisd been magnificent,' and --the enthusiasm, energy, and goodwill had been unparalleled. The final figures would be announced by the .Prime Minister. Mr Fraser, on Wednesday or Thursdav, and the total might- be £39,500,000 by that time.
