GENERAL ELECTION
INDEPENDENTS SPONSORED BY PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT
A number of Independent candidates to stand for various seats at the forthcoming General Election are being sponsored by the,People's Movement. Standing for one of the Dunedin seats will be Mr' W. J. Winefield, managing director of Messrs H. 0. Campbell Ltd. Mr Winefield, who is well known in business circles, is chairman of the Dunedin and Otago Goods Transport Control, president of the Otago Commercial Transport Association, an executive member of the Otago Importers and Shippers' Association, and a member of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce. Ho has a son serving overseas in the Air Force. It . has not yet been decided which of the Dunedin electorates Mr Winefield will contest. At Oamaru Mr George F. Cuttriss will be a candidate. He served in both the New Zealand and Australian forces during the last war, and has taken an active part in planning the rehabilitation of returned soldiers.
The People's Movement is sponsoring the candidature for Riccarton of Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P.. the sitting Independent member and the mayor of the borough. The sponsored candidate for Hauraki will be Mr H. T. Head, who served in the last war and was wounded in France at the age of 17.
For Lyttelton the candidate will be Mr H. Bliss, who is a dairy farmer at Heathcote. He has been prominently associated with most primary production organisations in Canterbury, •inaugurated the first herd-testing movement in the province, and has had local bodv experience. Mr Bliss is the father of Major H. Bliss, of the 2nd N.Z.E.F., who served in Greece, Crete, and the Middle East, and is now a prisoner of war.
