KAIKORAI BUSES.

10 THE EDITOK. Sir, —As a part-owner in the communal enterprise known as the Dunedin City Corporation transport department, may 1 suggest a way out of the difficulty which lias arisen with regard to the timing of the buses on the Ucta-gon-Kaikorai run? The majority of the bus services run ' by the Glasgow Corporation were inaugurated during the term of office as general manager of Mr James Dairymple, whose motto was- " Safety First." The timing of each route was ascertained by driving a bus containing an inspector of the transport department and a memher of the transport workers' union over the new route. At each stopping place a halt was made, and thus were all parties satisfied.—l am, etc., Jock Tamson. February 9.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Let me voice my thanks, together, I trust, with those of the rightthinking residents of the hill districts, for the stand taken by the Dunedin Transport Union on the time-table set lor Stuart street. Although a 10-min-ute service may for convenience be desirable, surely" the element of safety should govern the rules of sanity. 1, having no alternative, must use the Stuart street bus on Sundays, and 1 consider the route taken via Littleboiirue is no fit road for any bus—never mind one or two —streaking up "nd down like a, fire engine trying to maintain a 10-minute service. Maybe fitting them with sirens would help, though this would undoubtedly bo disturbing to the nearby residents. By close observation on Saturday last J noticed it took two and a-half minutes to load a bus at the Octagon—this bus had a conductor —and estimate that another two and a-half minutes would be used for intermittent stops, also a minute at each end for turning, which allows only three minutes' running time each way. That is asking for trouble on such a narrow, winding road. T have it on good authority that Rattray street has a spare new rone not yet off the coil, so with this coorl stand by would it not be possible to transfer the Rattray street bus service—a qnarter-hour one —over to Stuart street and run a full on this route with trnim? This would save hirincr buses. ss"-e fnpl nnd tyres.—T am, etc. The Saint.
