[By Diana.] Social and Personal. Miss Valmai Sundstrum left yesterday to spend a 'holiday in Foilding. where she will he the guest of Mrs F. A, .Sundstrum. Mrs D. Y. M. Miller was in the chair at the October meeting of the Roslyn branch of the League of Mothers. Members, assisted by the Maori Hill League Orchestra, presented an' amusing and interesting programme. The provincial' president' and secretary were welcomed and presented with posies. On Thursday the North-cast Valley Presbyterian Ladies' Choir held a successful afternoon tea concert, at which £l2 12s was raised for prisoners of war parcels. Hems wore given by the choir and Mcsdames Dagger, Laing, Gillanders, Oliver, White, Robertson, Pcttei, Misses Sommcrvillc, Maxwell, and tb>ec members of the Technical College Orchestra. The Roslyn Ladies’ Bowling Club celebrated its twenty-first birthday recently with a birthday party held In the pavilion. Mrs G. W. Reid received the guests, among whom were seven foundation members, who were presented with floral sprays. The first part of the evening was devoted to cards, Mcsdames Rc«s' and C. Wilkinson proving the winners.. An original composition composed and sung by Mrs Reid amused the party by its reference to dresses and details of 21 years ago. The birthday cake was cut by Mrs A. Barnett, the first president of the club. After supper Mcsdames W. A. Wilkinson (first secretary) and G. Scott gave reminiscences of the early clays of tbe club, and representatives from sister clubs conveyed greetings. Mrs J. .Swan, has returned from a fortnight’s holiday with Constable and Mrs Souter, Haifmoou Bay, Stewart Island. The annual meeting of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Women’s Food Value League will be held in the R.S.A. Hall next Thursday. Dr Helen Deem will speak on 1 Diet in Relation to Common Ailments.’ The C'aversham Ladies’ Bowling Club held a progressive pairs competition on Tuesday to mark the opening of the first playing day for the season. Mr A. Thomson was in charge of the games. The president, Mrs A. Hayward, welcomed the large number of members and friends present. The winners in the pairs were Mrs G. Newton and Mrs A. McDougall, with Mrs S. Ecclcs and Miss E. Pattison receiving the lesser prizes. Mrs E. Barltrop was the winner of the Kicky seat. Mrs W. Sharp presided at the monthly meeting of the. Maori Hill branch of the League of Mothers. Miss L. Vial, vocational guidance officer, spoke on the necessity of girls having a secondary, school education, and then being trained properly for whatever position they intended to occupy, so that they would bo both physically and mentally able to tackle adult life. Otherwise the community would have grave difficulties to face later on with a large group of untrained women on its hands. The Otago Pioneer Women’s Memorial Association celebrated on Wednesday its first birthday, tbe anniversary of the clay on which, at a full meeting of delegates, the decision to purchase the present memorial building was made. The building was ready for dedication as a memorial in the. following February, and since that date membership of the association has steadily grown. It stands at 138. To celebrate the anniversary, these members assembled for a social evening. The president. Dr McKinnon, made a few opening remarks, in which she expressed appreciation of tbe interest shown and help given by all members of the executive. ■ She said that one way in which wc could pay our debts to' the last generation was by handing down something of value to those that come after us. Advice has been received from London that Dr Mary Russell t who for some years past has been tesident ear; nose, and throat surgeon at tbe Royal Hospital, Wolverhampton, has been' appointed from a large number of applications to the position of assistant ear, nose, and throat surgeon' to the Leamington and Coventry Hospitals. Dr Russell, • who is a graduate of Otago University, is the eldest daughter of Mr T. H. Russell, of Milburn. A 'pleasant function took place in the ‘ Evening Star ’ Office yesterday afternoon, when the directors and represoualives from all departments met to make a presentation of a dinner set to Miss Margaret Picw, whose marriage will take place soon. Mr C. Stanley Smith handed the gift to Miss Plow, and wished her every happiness. ' A number of- speakers referred to the excellent work she bad done during the past five years and to her popularity among her fellow workers. The annual meeting of the Combined ex-G iris’ Service Group was held at St. Hilda's on Thursday evening, when the election of officers resulted as, follows: — President. Croquet, The Otago Croquet Association held its monthly meeting on Thursday, Mrs E. Gibson presiding. It was decided that interclub play this season would take the form of doubles only on a. time limit and would bo played ' on home lawns. _ The executive regretted that the association lawns would not be prepared up to playing standard owing to lack of labour.
