[By Sr. Ci.aik.] News anti Views. The Wellington Handicap, to be run over a mile and throe furlongs next mouth has been endowed with £I,OOO stake money. No fewer than 67 horses have been nominated for tho Tauniarunui Stakes, £IBO, to lie run over six furlongs at the Ohineuuiri meeting this month. It has been decided to make the stake fur (his year’s New Zealand Trotting Cup £2,750, and a gold cup valued at £IOO. The members of the 'Wellington Racing Club, ai the annual meeting, voted £7,150 to patriotic funds, one-third of amount each to tho After-care Fund, General Purposes Fund, and Sick and Wounded Fund. , North Islanders expect The Champ and Poutatau to make good at the Wanganui meeting this and next week-end, basing (his opinion on the form they showed at the Grand National meeting. It is reported from the Hawke’s Bay district that Dozio Boy, winner of this year’s Great Northern Steeplechase, is to be routed. This is probably the sequel to his poor showing at Riccarton last month, _ Centrepoise was nominated for the principal race at the Wanganui meeting tomorrow, but he will be a starter in (be Avondale Cup, in which he has 8.7. His recent work on the tracks has been good, ami he is expected to run prominently. To avoid divisions at the spring meeting to be held on October 24 and 26 the connniUco of the Wellington Racing Club lias decided that after the acceptances it will, if necessary, reduce to within _ the ■ safety number any field by sectional ballot. The Wanganui spring meeting will- be held at Marlon, commencing to-morrow and concluding the following Saturday. Other racing fixtures arc the Avondale Cup fixture at Ellerslie and the Ashburton spring meeting. The Wellington Trotting Club’s fixture at Trenlham will be the only' light-harness fixture this week-end. Cheddington disappointed a very wide circle of backers when ho failed in each of his races at the National fixture, and the explanation was made that he is -a bad traveller. He will not have to travel far for to-morrow’s engagement at Marten, and on hie track work should be worth follow--111 lion’t Forget is sometimes accused of not always racing up to his track form, but he has been a fairly consistent performer, and, in view of his engagement to-morrow, it is worth remembering that his best form has been shown in the early stages oi each season. At Riccarton yesterday morning he ran the best seven furlongs, in Imm 3-ssec, which shows he is well forward m condition. The Avondale Guineas, to be run to-mor-row, will probably see the Nightmarch Praise colt, Representative, made favourite. Bonny Pay had much the better credentials up to six furlongs last season, and beat Representative the only time they met. Another with good two-year-old form to recommend his chances is Nizam, by Bulandshar from The Begum. Last season he won.twice and was three times second. For its meeting to be held on October 31 the Invercargill Trotting Club has issued an attractive programme, giving £1,500 in stakes. Tho Invercargill Trotting Cup, class 4 47, carries £SOO, and the Members’ Handicap, class 2.57. £215. The programme states:—“ Should it be necessary to run any* race in divisions, tho stake for that race will be increased by an amount sufficient to give the winner of each division not less than £IOO, and the horse placed second m each division not less than £20.” The ‘ Free Lance ’ selects the following horses to be fancied at Trentham to-morrow, when the first day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting will be held:— Array’ Handicap: Parfaite, Safari, Home Guard. United Nations Handicap: Lanaco, Free Bond, Trikkala. Roosevelt Handicap: Smirke, Great Deceiver, Certify. Churchill Handicap; High Play, Yon Yan, Captain Morant, Navy Handicap: Home Guard, Parfaite Safari. Air Force Handicap: Tnkka’.a. Gallant Navy, Lanaco. United States Fleet Handicap; Smirke, Great Deceiver, Free Bond. Home Guard Handicap: Integrity, Yon Yan. Symphony.
