DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB
At the meeting of the club to a good attendance of members and others, Captain E. V. .Sanderson, of ..Wellington, president of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, on an invitation from the club, spoke on the aims of his society, pointing out the necessity for the protection of forest and bird life. New Zealand was unique in that it had no mammals, but it had abundance of beautiful birds. Through neglect and the introduction of deer, goats, opossums, etc., which were responsible for much damage to our forests and the consequent destruction of bird life, this abundance was threatened. With the aid of coloured films and lantern slides he described many of our native birds, their natural habitat, nesting, and the various ways of feeding and protecting them. Captain Sanderson also showed a film of the • Sea Lions ’ of Queen Charlotte Sound in Canada in their natural habitat, and also one of New Zealand sea birds, and he was ably assisted in showing the films by Mr F. L. C. Scrivener as technician. Mr A. H. Fisher, in moving a vote of thanks, stressed the necessity of steps -being taken and continued to protect our forcsis and birds. The Mayor, who was present with the Mayoress, welcomed Captain Sanderson to Dam-din in such a cause, and stressed
tlie necessity of renewing onr forests and protecting them find also the birds. The chairman, Mr D. Tannock, aiso spoke on the subject, and thanked all those who had assisted, including the ladies, who had decorated (he hall for the occasion.
