AIR RAID SHELTERS
PROGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION The Works Committee of the City Council states that a report has been received from the city engineer relative to the progress of the work of erecting pipe shelters in the city streets, and discloses that to date 568 ft of 6ft diameter and 2,472 ft of sft diameter pipes have been delivered by the manufacturers providing accommodation for 4,844 persons. Authority has been granted to proceed with the construction of further pipe shelters in additional areas where the intensity of night population is next in order of magnitude. In addition, shelters will bo "prepared in Filleul street, near Hanover and Cargill streets, to provide for the public who may ho in George street at the time of a raid. A total of S4oft of 6ft and 88Sft of sft pipes has been authorised, with tin accommodation for an additional 3,012 persons. The estimated cost of this additional work, excluding the cost of the pipes, which are on loan from the Drainage Board, is £6,036, 75 per cent, of which will he borne hy the Government hy way of subsidy.
