WINTRY VISITATION
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 11. . Widespread falls of rain, hail, and snow were experienced throughout Canterbury during the night, and, although the fall generally was not heavy, it was accompanied by a bitiugly cold southwesterly wind. Reports received from tho country indicate that fairly heavy losses will bo experienced .with the spring lambs, as the laming season on the plains is now at its height. This morning. the city was under a thin blanket of white. The fall was not sufficient to cause any traffic stoppages. On the Cashmere Hills it was necessary to run a snow plough before the trams could operate, but following this no difficulty, was experienced. ASHBURTON RACES OFF (P.A.) ASHBURTON, Sept. 11. Adverse weather has necessitated the postponement ,of the Ashburton races till to-morrow week, September 19, the first available day. Snow set, in during the night, ranging from ' two to three inches on the high levels to a sprinkling along the coast.
