OBITUARY

LIEUTENANT D. W. HEALY The death has occurred in his seventyeighth year of Lieutenant David William (“Tim”) Healy, who was well known and highly esteemed in local military circles for many years, for he was stationed at tho Kensington Drill Hall as a permanent staff instructor for periods both before and after the Great War. Lieutenant Healy was horn in Dublin in 1864, and was educated at the Marlborough Street National School. In 1878 he joined the 47th Regiment, and subsequently served at the Curragh, Dublin, Aldershot, Gibraltar, and India, where he was for seven years. During his term in India he saw active service in the Duki Expedition under Brigadier-General Sir O. V. Tanner in 1884. Ho came to New Zealand in 1891, joining the Permanent Artillery at Wellington, Tie won a medal for the best shot two years in succession. In 1893 he was appointed di-ill instructor for tho Nelson and Marlborough -districts, and later went to Christchurch and Timaru. From the latter place he was transferred to Dunedin, and he served on tho permanent staff here until the outbreak of war, when be left with the Main Body of tho Ist N.Z.E.F. from Tahuna Park. After two years overseas he returned to Dunedin. As staff sergeant-major he continued to servo on the defence staff until his retirement 16 years ago. He was given commissioned rank about two years before be retired. Lieutenant Healy is survived by his wife, bis daughter (Mrs T. J. McDonald), and two sons, Arthur and William.
